Based on their performance on the AP exam, students may earn college credit. Most colleges and universities have an AP policy granting incoming students’ credit, placement, or both based on their AP exam grades. Students should consult with the policies of the colleges and universities to which they are applying to determine how their AP credits will be evaluated.

Registering for your AP Exam(s) is a two step process:

1. Log into your College Board account (or create an account if this is your first AP course).
2. Add the join code given to you by your instructor or the AP Coordinator

For students taking an AP course for the first time, with no previus SAT exams taken:

1. Navigate to the College Board website. This is at: www.collegeboard.org
2. As the homepage appears, click on the “create account” link below the sign in button.
3. This will open up the form to complete with demographic information. Make sure that you are using your legal name on these forms, as it will have to match your transcripts for college credits. Helpful tip: When asked for an email address, use a personal email.
4. Confirm email address through multifactor authentication
5. Choose to receive/deny info about student search services
6. Log into your new account

To add a join code:

1. Log into account and find “My AP classroom”
   1. Click the Yellow button that says “Join a course or exam”
   2. Enter your code
   3. Confirm information or change information
   4. Congrats! You are registered

Advanced Placement FAQ

Question: My course is listed as AP/DE. What does this mean?
Answer: Many advanced core classes in FCPS1 are marked as AP/DE. If your course is listed as AP/DE, this means that you will be required to take the corresponding AP exam at the end of the year to receive your weighted GPA credit, but you also have the option to dual enroll the course with LRCC to start your college transcript while still in high school.

Question: What is the difference between AP and DE?
Answer: AP and DE are both pathways to potential college credit. College credit for AP courses can be earned by scoring well on the corresponding AP exam (typically a 3 or above). However, some universities may only accept a score of a 4 or 5.

Question: Are AP courses weighted?
Answer: Yes! AP courses receive 1 extra GPA point, as long as the corresponding AP exam is taken in May. For example, if a student earns an A in an AP course, the A is worth 5 GPA points instead of 4. If the student earns a B in the course, the course is worth 4 GPA points instead of 3. If the student earns a C in the course, the course is worth 3 GPA points instead of 2. If the student earns a D in the course, the course is worth 2 GPA points instead of 2. Any failed courses will result in 0 GPA points.

Question: How do AP exams work?
Answer: The 2027 AP exams are scheduled to take place May 3-May 14. These are national exams that are administered on a strict schedule that is set by the College Board. All exams will utilize the testing application Blue Book. Exams are administered during 2 different sessions: 8am and 12pm. Each exam lasts between 3 and 4 hours.

Question: What if I do not take the AP Exam or am absent for it?
Answer: All students taking an AP course are expected to take the corresponding exam on the designated day. Since
these are national exams, there is very little flexibility for absences on test day. If there are school sponsored events that conflict with exam times, students will be allowed to test during the late testing window. For any medical absences, medical notes are required to qualify for a late testing opportunity. If you miss your exam and do not qualify for a late test, the weighted credit will be removed from the course and you may be responsible for paying a $40 unused exam fee.
