Dual Enrollment

What's the difference between Dual Enrollment (DE) and AP?

Schools in Virginia offer different types of courses through which you may earn college credits.  Dual enrollment opportunities are based on partnerships between high schools and two-year colleges.  Advanced Placement (AP) options involve courses and examinations that are evaluated by colleges and universities for credits.

Most dual enrollment students take their DE classes at FHS during the school day as part of their regular course schedule.  Students pay a reduced rate of tuition for the classes.  AP exams are given in the spring; FCPS pays the student exam registration fee.

Students have lots of reasons for participating in dual enrollment.  Common reasons include

  • reduce the time to degree completion and to save money

  • increase the academic rigor of the high school curriculum

  • become familiar with the expectations of the college level coursework

  • increase educational opportunities in college (e.g., double major, study abroad)

  • gain admission to a specific college

Each student is unique, so be sure to talk with your school counselor and the Career Coach to decide what's the best course for you.
